[edit] Virus Outbreak
- In the year 2005 a terrible computer virus called the 'Pluto's Kiss broke out on the net. Any computer that was connected to the net at that particular moment were shut down. This included all communication and networks throughout. It wasn't long until the United States fell into crisis with the virus.
- However, 77 Minutes later they were safe with the systems back up and running and the goverment were soon to find out that the virus was created by a 10 year old boy. Because everybody believed the country would be a disaster if a child could break into the defense system the President of the United States resigned.
- Because of it's remarkable stability, the Altimit Operating System was the only operating system to survive the virus attack and follows the main storyline of the .hack world.
[edit] The Series
The storyline in the .hack world follows many different types of interactivity. It started off with an anime television series called .Hack//SIGN. On the side of this, another anime show called .Hack//Liminality which can only be seen in 4 30 minute episodes bought on DVD. These DVD's can be seen when you buy one of the .hack games. [edit] Storyline
- You play as a young school boy (nameless, you can base it on yourself) who has recently purchased a copy of The World, a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) where you decide to create your own character called Kite (or once again, whatever you want to call him). You realise one of your friends from school also has the game and he offers to teach you how to play. So, off you embark with Orca as you go through the learning stage of the game teaching you how to write e-mails to other players, visit town and transfer through different servers.
- During a trip to a field (an area where you fight the online creatures in the game) everything starts to go wrong as a ghost flies by, heading to check it out, a virus infects Orca and for some reason, he falls into a coma. Quitting the online game, you visit him in hospital but he shows no sign of getting better. In the first part of the 4-parter epic series, you must find out why your friend has fallen into this coma and why hackers are trying to help you find the answer.
[edit] Features
- E-mail As the game is a simulation into the MMORPG world, you experience certain features of an online game would, you have the ability to e-mail anyone in game, with realistic responses which you can keep replying to in order to build up relationships. This proves useful when trying to investigate other players about the mysterious ghost, Orca's coma and other areas in the game which prove intruiging.
- Web Boards Like e-mail, you can log into a web board in The World and read peoples questions and advice. Here you can also post your own, asking everybody the information you seek. It proves hard to proceed through the game without looking at the board as nice clues and notices are up there which make the game longer and more interresting.
- Team Mates As realistic as an MMORPG is, your not the only one playing, infact, there is 20 million people playing (not at the same time of course) and as you travel through different servers you'll meet many different characters, some of which are not human. Masters of the game have learned how to change their own looks and appearences and take on the forms of animals. Team mates can be found around vast locations and although not everybody wants to join your party, you can find some one board seeking help and will follow you to find it, it offers more realism as you can see them follow you aswell, they don't just appear in fights!.
- Different Servers and levels. This is where you pump up the difficulty, as the game begins, you can only access the Delta server as the others are down due to the virus, and here you can create your own levels to fight your own monsters. By entering keywords you find or make up, it gives a different asset. For Example; you could select Dark as your first keyword which might make enemies stronger and treasure more rewarding. Holy as your second word could make the area a water area or a cave area and Smashing Rock as your third keyword could produce secret items in a certain location. This allows hours of different explorable areas to be taken into account.
- Returnable Town As you progress through The World you can return back to your root town called Root Town (cleverly put) where you can be greeted by the same similar faces. Very nice when you can leave your items in the storage area, when you wish to restock up on your stuff and need to find out some information from some old sources!
- Japanese Voice-overs Although I don't myself, you can select in the options to have the game played in Japanese for the full experience, I play with English Dubs and Subtitles as I always have done, the quality is exactly the same but it's an immersive little feature. The voice casting I recognised straight away as some have been featured in The Animatrix.
