Dantooine is a pleasant world of grasslands, rivers and lakes, and is home to mainly farmers in a small population, spread between single-family settlements. Native creatures include the kath hound, the iriaz, the fabool, and the sentient Dantari people.

During the time of the Infinite Empire, Dantooine was subject to the mighty power of the Star Forge. Deep in the planet, a Star map was hidden, containing data of the Star Forge. A Jedi training enclave established by Master Vodo-Siosk Baas was in operation on Dantooine during the Great Sith War, but was destroyed by Darth Malak, along with many of the planet's other settlements, forty years later.

After the Jedi Civil War, much of the planet had been destroyed, and many lives ended, and as such, many of the people of Dantooine who had once celeberated the Jedi, now blamed them for the events on the planet that had lead to such suffering, and wanted to be no part of them. The remains of the destroyed Enclave is all that was left on the planet, but the Government had decided their only choice for stabilising their income was to make the looting of such sacred places legal. Dantooine was the planet chosen by Master Vrook to hide after the Jedi Council split, in fear that their presence and gathering would bring the Sith Lords. Vrook returned to this planet because of his fond memories at the Enclave he had helped to create.

During an interrogation aboard the Death Star, Princess Leia attempted to fool Grand Moff Tarkin into believing the hidden Rebel base was situated on Dantooine. Tarkin replies that Dantooine is "too remote" for an effective use of the Death Star, although the deciding factor here seems to be a political and social impact, rather than military necessity.
