In Video Games, Game Over is commonly the ending text of a game, whether that be because the player has failed, or has completed the game unto the end. It was first used in Arcade games, but was widely adopted by many video games too.

Most video games now use other ending text, such as "The End", as Game Over is often associated with the player killing the main character, or not succeeding at the game's objective. However, the usage varies between games, but the message is often clear. In earlier games, such as Space Invaders, the text was simply printed on top of the screen, however, more modern games will often have a separate screen, with far more elaborate graphical sequences.

In games such as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the Game Over screen is used to add an extra depth to the game - the player is tricked into believing they have suddenly failed the game, whereas the actual game is still playing in a small window in the corner. The sequel, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater includes a Fake Death pill to trick guards. When used, the Game Over screen appears, but the player can still take a "Revival Pill", as long as they do so quickly. It also includes a boss that can only be defeated by negotiating out of a Game Over screen after the player's character dies.
