[edit] Introduction
Released by BioWare (the famous creators of the NeverWinter Nights series), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic won an amazing 35 awards including Best Game of the Year by numerous outlets. The game follows a character (female or male depending on your choice) out to rescue Bastilla a Jedi Knight who has been captured and held on the city of Taris. Once freed she senses a great force inside you and you must leave on the Ebon Hawk (which you steal from a whorehouse) and leave to Dantooine to take on your Jedi Training.[edit] Storyline
The game follows a basic storyline, however, each character has an individual storyline which describes his or hers past and their future. The primary storyline is set around you and Bastilla
On Dantooine you learn about the Star Maps which (and when they are all activated) will lead you to the Star Forge which is a primitive version of the Death Star, capable of destorying entire galaxies at a flick of a switch. The evil Darth Malak is after the Star Forge in order to take over the galaxy however, you must stop him but along the way you find out some interresting surprises which reveal you as Darth Malak's master and you must choose if you want to rule the galaxy or save it!. This leads into further paths which allow you to choose the fate of every individual character (mainly Bastilla's) which bring you back and forth of the paths between good and evil.
[edit] Characters
You can have a total of 9 playable characters in the game, some of which you must have in order to pass, some others are variable characters which could die or move on earlier in the game. Beside the main player, these are:
[edit] Features
Like many RPGs there are extra features to get you going and staying true to the game, many are individual to Knights of the Old Republic. The game features a variety of minigames which, although not important, add extra quality to the game. These vary from simple card games to swoop racing. Not only do these provide an extra distraction to the game, they can also help financially, and like most gambling, can also be extremelely damaging to the player's wallet. Most of these games can also be "upgraded" to provide better odds, for instance, a player can purchase extra more useful Pazaak cards which will give them a much higher advantage over their opponent, although these do not come without a cost.- Pazaak - A card game played in most bars
- Bounties - Available on Taris and many other places
- Customisable Lightasber's - Build your own weapon of the force, be it short bladed
- Podracer style racing game - Swoop Racing is Simple to play but fun to do
- DogFighting - Mid-space battles between fighters
[edit] Planets
The only disapointment that many fans have noticed in the game, are the planets and spacestations. There are a total of 7 in the PC version and only 6 in the Xbox version. These are:
- Taris - A major city like Coruscant (which get's destroyed once finished)
- Dantooine - The Jedi Planet, half way during the game, you cannot fly the Ebon Hawk back here
- Tatooine - One of the most famous planets in all the Star Wars galaxy
- Manaan - A vast ocean and Republic Base
- Kashyyyk - Wookie Homeworld
- Korriban - The Sith Training Planet
- Yavin Space Station - A Place to trade goods (only available in PC version)
As earlier stated, although these levels were vast, once all the enemies were killed, they didn't respawn as constantly only to pose an annoyance. On the other hand, there were many side quests which make you want to play the game slower spending longer on the un-cleansed planets towards the beginning.
About three quarters you way through the end of the game, you could travel to any other planets other than the ones you are on, many people save just before so they can walk around, this means once you have completed the game, you could not travel to and from planets.
[edit] Sequel
The game was very popular, so LucasArts decided to make a sequel to the game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II.
