Liquid Snake is Solid Snake's nemesis in Metal Gear Solid and in the GameCube port Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. They are both products of the "Les Enfants Terribles" project, in which Big Boss's DNA was used to produce one Perfect Soldier; in order to do so, the egg which was fertilized with Big Boss' cells was divided into 8 identical embryos, from which 6 were killed to 'encourage' development from the other 2. Later, recessive genes and dominant genes were separated between the remaining 2 embryos, making one of them the perfect soldier: Liquid Snake. However, Big Boss always treated Liquid with despise, which led Liquid to believe he was the 'ungifted one', the 'remainings' of his Brother (Solid Snake) when he learned about the project. (all this according to what Liquid himself said in Metal Gear Solid).

After Solid Snake killed Big Boss in Zanzibar, a deep feeling of resent grew inside Liquid since his "Brother" took away from him his "Birth right" to kill Big Boss and have his revenge. Liquid returned from his service with the British SAS (Special Air Service) and became the leader of FOXHOUND, shortly after, he was participating in the New Generation Special Forces Genome Project along with FOXHOUND, and found out that "Signs of Simmetry" were being found among the soldiers who had gone through Gene Therapy, and that this was bound to extinct them. It was because of that and his dream of a world that was always in war, and in which great soldiers like himself were honored as they were during the cold war, that he decided to "Fight for his own Genes" (those of Big Boss, which were also inside the Genome Soldiers) and hijack Metal Gear Rex.

After beginning what he called "The Revolution" in Shadow Moses Island, he demanded that the US Government delivered the remainings of Big Boss (recovered after The Zanzibar Incident) and one billion dollars or else they would launch a Nuclear Strike, all this in order to find a cure to the genome defects found in the Genome Soldiers. But he never intended to give Rex back, his intentions were to sell it to General Sergei Gurlukovich, leader of the Spetsnaz forces inside the GRU, in Russia, and to become his ally to supposedly "Rebuild Mother Russia"; but Liquid's intentions were actually to start an international incident which would spawn multiple wars in order to be Needed and Honored as a great soldier, in the tradition of Big Boss.

His plans, however, weren't succesful, since his "Brother" Solid Snake was able to defeat him and destroy Metal Gear Rex during what was called The Shadow Moses Incident. Liquid died as a victim of the FoxDie program during Shadow Moses.

In the sequel "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty", his arm appears as a transplant for Revolver Ocelot's arm, shich was cut off by Gray Fox in "Metal Gear Solid". Through this arm, Liquid apparently seizes control of Ocelot's conciounsness every once in a while.
