Metal Gear REX
From LibertyWiki
Metal Gear REX was built due to pressure on Arms Tech, a weapons company who seemed to have funding problems. It was paid to build Metal Gear REX quietly with no news to be released about it.
During a test on the Shadow Moses Ilsnad, a special forces group called FOXHOUND captured it and stopped it leading a destructive path in the world.
One engineer, Hall Otacon Emmerich did not know what he was paid to design as he greatly despised the though of Nuclear Weaponry, he and alot of the other scientists working on the project were told that it was to stop and intercept Nuclear attacks on the country. This meant that Metal Gear REX's weapons had to be built in a seperate field, to keep them all in the dark.
During the infiltration by FOXHOUND, Otacon found out it's real purpose and as designer of the vehicle, he promised to destroy it himself with Solid Snakes assistance.
A spy in the FOXHOUND group called Revolver Ocelot captured the Metal Gear REX blueprints and sold them on to the black market. Soon, the machine spread accross the world and Solid Snake and Otacon travel around aswell in order to sabotage the remaining Metal Gear REX's
It wasn't long before the United States Millitary developed their own Metal Gear called Metal Gear RAY and was designed to eliminate it's descendants and stop any terrorist threats.
[edit] Weaponry and Cockpit
During the first game Metal Gear Solid, it was seen operable by Liquid Snake and used to attack Otacon and Solid Snake Although Liquid Snake could not see anything, a sensor indicated where abouts everything was by using a radar in it's left shoulder.

REX is equipped with two M61 Vulcan cannons, a Theatre missile defense missile module, knee-mounted anti-tank missiles, a free electron laser, and an electromagnetic railgun (although Otacon's description of its functionality is far closer to a coilgun). All were supposedly intended to defend the REX unit and intercept incoming nuclear weapons.
In fact, REX's railgun is designed to deliver a nuclear warhead. With no propellant trail or engine flares to reveal its location and trajectory, a nuclear strike could be made which would be impossible to intercept or to trace back to its origin. Combined with REX's high mobility, it represents an incredible threat; in Otacon's own words, "this thing could mean the end of the world".
REX's armour is all but impregnable; however, the lone pilot is completely dependent on a radome mounted on REX's left shoulder to provide information about the outside world. If the radome is destroyed, REX immediately opens the pilot's compartment; not only is the pilot then dependent on their own eyesight to acquire and attack targets, but they are vulnerable to weapons fire (for example, stinger missiles).
