[edit] Back story

The game is set in 1964, during the Cold War, when tensions are running high between the Americans and the Soviet Union. CIA soldier, Naked Snake is dispatched to Tselinoyarsk, deep in the jungles of Russia to rescue the defecting Russian scientist, Sokolov and destroy the weapon of mass destruction named the Shagohod, a huge Tank designed to launch nuclear weapons from any type of terrain.

[edit] Virtuos Mission

On August 24, 1964, a time whem the Cold War seemed posied to develop into a third World War. At the end of World War II, the opposing political ideologies of the world's superpowers - capitalism and communism - became the pretext for an unconventional conflict between the USA, the USSR and their respective allies, that would last for 40 years. With both parties aware that neither would triumph in the event of an atomic, chemical or biological warfare - in accordance with the "mutually assured destruction" (or "MAD") strategic doctrine - this battle was contested in an oblique manner. From the arms race to the conquest of space, espionage to "surrogate" conflicts fought in or through either nations - such as Vietnam, Korea and Afghanistan - both Eastern and Western blocs sought to gain the upper hand in a variety of ways while avoiding direct military action. However, during the early 60's, political manoeuvring - particulary the Cuban Missile Crisis - led both sides to the brink of nuclear war. It is against this backdrop that Metal Gear Solid 3.

A US secret agent named Jack - designated Naked Snake for operational purposes - is sent into the Soviet Union by the American Goverment to escort a scientist named Sokolov back to the United States. Sokolov has been developing a devestating invention: the Shagohod, a nuclear weapons platform of enormous power. However, the completion of this device will upset the delicate balance of mutually assured destruction: those who can't control it would have the upper hand in the Cold War. This mission is extremely dangerous; Snake's capture might lead to a diplomatic flashpoint and could threaten world peace. As the mission begins, Naked Snake is supported via radio by three advisors: Major Zero (aka Major Tom), a medical consultant known as Para-Medic and his former mentor, The Boss.

A master of camouflage and well versed in both combat and survival techniques, Naked Snake infiltrates the enemy base and frees Sokolov. However, as he attempts to escort his charge back to the extraction point, he encounters The boss, who has defected and is collduing with Colonel Volgin. Volgin plans to overthrow the regime of Khrushchev, the soviet premier, to allow Brezhnev to rise to power. The Colonel wishes to engineer victory in the Cold War for the USSR, with an eventual goal of World Domination. To achieve this, he intends to employ the super-weapong developed by Sokolov. Volgin is in possession of The Philosophers Legacy, a vast and seemingly inexhaustible wealth. This has enabled him to establish and control the agency known as GRU, an organisation that often works in competition with the more established KGB. It has also enabled him to attract the likes of Ocelot and The Boss (and the Cobra Unit) to his cause. In order to win his trust, The Boss even gives him two portable nuclear warheads aka Davey Crockets.

After she stops his rescue attempt, The Boss severely injures Snake and he is apparently left to die after being thrown from a great height into a river. Volgin and his comrades retreive Sokolov, and force him to continue work on Shagohod. After patching up, Naked Snake witnesses a colossal explosion as Volgin uses his nuclear warheads to destroy the former research facility. As Naked Snake makes his escape, the Virtuous Mission ends.
