Otacon

Otacon is a character that first appeared in the video game Metal Gear Solid. Otacon's real name is Hal Emmerich and he is the scientist who designed the latest Metal Gear war machine. Otacon is discovered cowering in a locker by Solid Snake. Once Otacan understands Snake's mission to destroy Metal Gear, he assists Snake throughout the rest of the story. Otacon advises Snake that he purposely designed Metal Gear with an obvious weakness, stating that nothing can be infallible, although one might infer that Otacon's guilt over creating a weapon of war led him to make such a design flaw. Otacon makes use of a stealth camouflage that bends light away from itself, turning the user almost completely invisible. Using this camo, Otacon is able to sneak about the base that holds Metal Gear undetected.

In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Otacon returns with Snake after they form a group called Philanthropy, designed to expose Metal Gear technology to the world. Otacon also appears in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots as a mission handler for Snake. The code name Otacon is derived from Otakon, a yearly convention focusing on the art of anime and manga, of which Emmerich is a fan.
