Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided is an MMORPG set in the Star Wars universe, developed and maintained by Sony Online Entertainment (Creators of Everquest and other MMORPGs). This was the first (and only) MMORPG published by LucasArts and stands to be one of the most popular, with subscribers well above 250,000.

In the game, players can take on many combat and artisan professions, including (but not limited to) Bounty Hunter, Musician, Rifleman, Chef and a wide variety of others. A skill point system governs how many professions a player can master, and each level takes up a number of points out of the maximum available. The game world spans over many planets famous from the movies, including Naboo, Corellia, Dathomir and Tatooine, and a wide variety of animals and monsters vary between planets.

The game had high expectations during development, especially with news that veteran designer, Raph Koster, was heading the project. However, when the release date was constantly taken back, and plans of PlayStation 2 and XBox versions of the games were withdrawn, hopes for the dream game were broken. Early previews saw many bugs and broken features which would be a problem for the game, even after release.

Many of the planend game features didn't make the original release, which slowed down the development process for adding newer features when the game's subscriber numbers increased. Developers worked hard on introducing Player cities, and creature mounts, and these features were released in a patch in November that year.

Jump to Lightspeed (JTL) is the first expansion for Star Wars Galaxies which adds the ability for players to take a ship and fly in outerspace. It was released in October, 2004, almost 18 months after the game was originally released. The game adds many ships found in the era of the original trilogy, including the YT-1300, which is very similar to the Millenium Falcon.

Rage of the Wookiees is the second expansion to the game was released in May, 2005, around the same time as the final Star Wars movie, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is set to be released in cinemas. The expansion will add the Wookiees as a new playable civilization, and the planet of Kashyyyk, as well as some content from the new movie. Other features will include new spacefighters for those who bought Jump to Lightspeed, resource mining in space, and cybernetic limbs for player's characters.
