The Boss

The Boss is a legendary American soldier, and the founder and leader of the Cobra Unit. She is known as the mother of US special forces. During World War 2 she was part of the invasion of Normandy and ultimately helped lead the Allied forces to victory. She is also called The Joy, and in Russia she is known as Voyevoda.

The Boss and The Sorrow (one of the former members of The Cobras) are Adamska/Ocelot's parents; they had a love relationship until the start of the Cold War, when they both returned to their countries (USA and USSR respectively) and met again in a mission as enemies. The Sorrow sacrificed himself for The Boss to accomplish her mission, letting her kill him in Tselinoyarsk. After this unfortunate event, The Boss regreted being now the enemy of one who formerly was his ally. She is also the daughter of one the original members of the Wiseman's Commitee, the head council of The Philosophers, and it is because of all this that she despises the way in which The Philosophers have developed, leaving behind the principles of unification and world stability over which this group was founded. Because of this, The Boss seeks to "Unify the world" again (East and West), as it was before and during World War 2.

The Boss serves as a mentor and mother-like figure to Naked Snake, with whose help she developed the fighting technique known as Close Quarters Combat (CQC). In the late 1960's, she took the mission of retrieving The Philosopher's Legacy, a fortune that was generated by The Soviet Union, The United States of America and The People's Republic of China during World War 2 in order to assure Victory of the Allies, and which was ultimately stolen by Col. Yevgeniy Borisovich Volgin's father in the confusion of the Post-war. She served as an undercover agent and supposedly defected to The Soviet Union, reuniting the Corba Unit now in leage with Col. Volgin, who was in possession of The Legacy.

The Boss gave Col. Volgin two Davey Crockett Miniaturized/Portable Nuclear Warheads as a sign of friendship, but unexpectedly Col. Volgin used one of them in the mountains of Tselinoyarsk and blamed the USA for the disaster. After this, tension grew between USSR and USA, leaving Washington with no option but to put the blame on The Boss and send someone to kill her (as a sign of good will to the USSR) and Col. Volgin (as a favor to President Krushchev, since Volgin was part of an extremist faction along with Breshnev); this someone was Naked Snake, and this mission was called "Operation Snake Eater".

Having her mission thoroughly revised, she was left with no option but to die according to plan in order to prevent a major incident between the USA and the USSR. In her profound patriotism, she accepted her mission and saw it through to the end, helping Snake to complete his own mission and to get The Philosopher's Legacy for the USA. Nevertheless, before they went into battle, she passed on her beliefs of World Unification to Snake, telling him that there's no such thing as a timeless enemy, and that "...a soldier's abilities should not be meant to kill friends..."; afterwards, Snake killed her in battle. Snake learned the lesson, and started to share The Boss's ideals.

After the compleition of Operation Snake Eater, Snake learned from EVA, an agent from The People's Republic of China who had him convinced that she was an undercover agent of the CIA inside KGB, that The Boss wasn't a traitor, and that her sacrifice was an act of patriotism while it served to clean up the disaster that the US Government's along with the american Philosophers (later known as The Patriots) greed had unleashed. After this, Snake was profoundly hurt and furious with the Government. He was awarded the title of Big Boss by President Jhonson and continued to be an elite member of USA Special forces (see Big Boss), until the events of Outer Heaven and Zanzibar, in which Big Boss attempted to reach the dream of The Boss.
